Work and income distributions

Select age, employment status and employer size, then explore income below. Open “Show detailed categories” for finer choices. Expanding or collapsing does not change your conditions.
About the display and calculations
This view uses gender, age, employment status, employer size and annual income. Vertical bars show respondents per category. Income intervals have different widths, so bar area or height should not be interpreted as count density. Groups and details are levels of the same attribute; respondents are not counted twice.
Each chart applies conditions from the other attributes. Its own selection is indicated by colour and outlines. The headline count applies all conditions. Multiple selections use OR within an attribute and AND across attributes. Clearing a group also clears its detailed selections. Clearing the last detailed selection returns to the whole group.
Changing survey year clears the conditions. Detailed categories retain each year’s published options. Age groups are under 30, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60 or older. Employer size is grouped into under 100, 100–299 and 300 or more employees; annual income into under JPY 3 million, JPY 3–5.99 million and JPY 6 million or more. Unknown and declined answers remain separate. Employer-size groups are for comparison, not legal classifications of large or small businesses. Missing answers are included in denominators.
These charts describe survey respondents, not estimates of Japan’s population. They show associations between work and income, not causal effects of employment status or employer size on income.
