Who does what kind of work?
Select a gender, age or type of work to update the other distributions. Select it again to clear it.
Loading categories for each survey.
Hover or focus a segment to see its category and count. You can also select by name. The age chart shows age horizontally and counts vertically. Industry and occupation initially show three categories per group; use the circular arrow to reveal more. Expanding or collapsing does not change your conditions. Select a bar to narrow the results.
About the display and calculations
This view uses four attributes: gender, age, industry and occupation. Ages retain each survey’s original categories, so a bar in an earlier survey may cover several ages. Bar lengths show counts, not density. Industry and occupation each use a shared count scale within that attribute. Groups and details are levels of the same attribute, not additional respondents.
Each chart applies conditions from the other attributes. Its own selection is indicated by colour and outlines. The headline count applies all conditions. Multiple selections use OR within an attribute and AND across attributes. Clearing a group also clears its detailed selections. Clearing the last detailed selection returns to the whole group.
Changing survey year clears the conditions. Detailed age, industry and occupation categories retain each year’s published options. The established mapping into nine industry groups and four occupation groups is used. Missing answers are included in denominators.
These charts describe survey respondents, not estimates of Japan’s population. No average income is calculated from category midpoint values.
