Knowledge and work — Isolate field groups (compare prefectures)

An experiment in isolating groups of fields studied and comparing the distributions of fields studied and fields important at work between two prefectures.

2025, by residence / One field studied × one first-ranked work field
Point to a bar to compare counts and shares for that pairing in both prefectures.
Named fields on both axes; Other and None excluded. Dashed floor line: identical studied and first-ranked work fields.

How to read this chart and its data

The X-axis spreads the fields within the selected group across the plot. Y contains all 298 first-ranked work fields. A: language, culture and society; B: mathematics and information; C: nature, materials and technology; D: life, health and everyday living. Both prefectures use the same field order, viewpoint and height scale.

The dashed floor line marks identical studied and first-ranked work fields. For group A, it appears only within the A band on the work axis. Not every A-to-A pairing is the same field. Because the selected group is expanded horizontally, this is not a 45-degree line across the whole plot.

By default, heights are percentages of respondents plotted within the selected group in each prefecture. Same-field responses are included. Changing the group or prefectures resets the shared scale to the larger maximum. You can also select respondent counts. Heights are not visible from above.

Point to a bar or floor point to see counts and shares for the same pairing in both prefectures below the charts. Dragging and rotation buttons affect both views. Prefectures, group, measure and viewpoint are stored in the URL for bookmarking.

The data cover 2025 and all ages, with named fields on both axes; Other and None are excluded. The detailed composition of fields studied within each group is not adjusted. In small groups, one person can substantially change percentages; read them alongside respondent counts.
