How to read this chart and its data

The two views draw on the same survey. The connection layout uses up to three fields closely related to work; the distribution layout uses the single field ranked first. Each person contributes to one pairing in the distribution layout.

The X and Y axes list the same 298 fields in the same order. A–D are groups arranged by Rokugeisha, with fields ordered by their original codes within each group. Coordinate distances do not measure similarity between fields.

The default height is logarithmic in count + 1, compressing high counts so smaller connections remain visible. Height ratios are not count ratios. Switch to linear for heights proportional to counts. Select a stem or dot to read the exact count.

The base diagonal marks pairings where the field studied matches the field at work. There are also connections between different fields within each group. A match or difference is not a measure of educational value or career success.

Counts come from self-reported responses in 2025. They do not describe occupations, how much an education is used, or intervening career histories. No adjustment for respondent composition or population weighting has been applied.

Field names use Rokugeisha’s existing translations, not official Cabinet Office translations. The field reference provides the original Japanese labels.
