How to read this network and understand the data
Choose a high school prefecture to explore where respondents who attended high school there went on to study and where they live now. The high school node is placed at the center. Choose a university or graduate school prefecture as well to focus on respondents who followed that route.
Each high school prefecture has a layout based on the 2025 responses across all gender and age groups. Changing the high school prefecture changes the layout. Changing the year, gender, age, university prefecture or displayed routes keeps it fixed. Distances between nodes are not geographical distances.
The view includes respondents whose highest level of education is university or graduate school and whose high school, institution of highest education and current residence are all identified within Japan’s 47 prefectures. For respondents with graduate education, the institution’s location is not necessarily where they studied as undergraduates. Each line represents the number of respondents with that combination of locations. Each person contributes two lines when both routes are shown. Showing only one route does not change who is included.
Line widths use the same count scale for both years. Differences in respondent numbers or composition across years, gender and age groups are not adjusted. Age is measured at the time of each survey. The comparison does not follow the same individuals over time, and current residence does not reveal their full migration history or whether they will return in the future.
This network explores what prefecture-level data can reveal about the connections between places of study and places of residence.
